Generator Head

A generator head can be purchased with an alternator, or separately.

An electrical generator can be an essential component for any home owner. They provide power to a few choice appliances, for a certain amount of time, using a variety of different sources.  The most important part of any generator, is the generator head.  This component, also known as an alternator, is probably the most important part of the unit.  A generator head takes whatever your power source may be, and converts it into a viable electric current that you can use in home appliances.  Alternators can vary based upon generator model, and you can also purchase a power generator head unit by itself to make your generator more effective.

But before you can think about the best generator head for your needs, you’ll need a power generator.  There are three basic types of generators, and they are distinguishable by which type of power source they use.  Some generators run on gasoline, others are natural gas generators, and also some run on battery inverter systems.  All of which with certain advantages and disadvantages.  A gas generator will be able to put out the most power, but to use one you’ll have to have an outdoor area that can facilitate it’s use.  Gasoline causes a lot of harmful fumes to be released into the air, so the gas powered generator will have to be outside.  You would also need to have around 15 gallons of gas on hand at all times in case the power should go out.

A natural gas generator is usually easier to manage, and can put out around the same amount of power as standard gasoline.  Natural gas usually has a longer shelf life, so you won’t need to keep a new stock of gasoline on hand at all times.  Battery operated generators work off their own large battery system, and so don’t put out as much power, but are better for the environment.  A battery operated generator uses a large battery in order to provide limited power for a certain amount of time during a power outage.

No matter which generator you use, you’ll need an alternator.  All will come with generator heads, but you can also buy an alternator separately to make sure that you get the maximum amount of power out of your generator.  Sometimes the generator head that you purchase will only have an alternator that provides a little bit of power from the amount of fuel used from the source.  But by purchasing a generator head independently, you can find an alternator that provides more electricity for less fuel, making the unit much more economical.

To find a good generator head you can go to a local store, like Home Depot or Sears, who will have a few different options.  But to really find an alternator for your generator, that’s guaranteed to do the job up to your standards, the internet will be your best bet.  Websites like Amazon.com and NorthernTool.com have a good variety of generator heads that will be more effective, and cheaper that anything you can find locally.  Typically a generator head will cost you around $500-$800, and a widely used brand like NorthStar will probably be the best place to start shopping.
